Final Thoughts

Also, although I haven't finished yet, I wanted to create a place for our "final thoughts" about Waiter Rant. Maybe a 1-10 rating and likes/dislikes. I'll post my thoughts as I finish. Until then, Spanish test!!

edit: more importantly, what do you think about Steve himself?

  1. One of the most personally appealing aspects of Waiter Rant for me was Steve. He is/was a normal, relatable guy that had interesting things to say. I feel like that is hard to find in literature. The character is either too spectacular and unbelievable (for example, Gatsby) or too boring and uninteresting (for example, every single character in "A Raisin in the Sun") The fact that this book is non fiction and the events of the novel took place in real life really made me think about the security of jobs after college and how hard the job market really is. All and all (as far as Steve goes) he is the perfect ambassador into the restaurant industry.

  2. I would agree, the novel not only had interesting things to say, but it had important and profound pieces of advice to offer. This novel is especially applicable to high schoolers who often find themselves working in jobs similar to the ones "The Waiter" had. His pieces of advice about dealing with hostile work environments and difficult people are invaluable.

  3. Yes, and it's always intriguing to see the world from somewhat the outside, I especially love when he comments on how kids or young adults behave when nobody is looking. It's like looking at a video of yourself that you didn't know was being filmed, and becoming very conscious of all your actions. Now, whenever I'm at a restaurant or store I put myself in the position of the waiter or store clerk, just imagining the things that they're seeing. This book has really added a bit of adventure to a seemingly menial job.
